Historic New Castle, Delaware : In 1680 the hamlet of New Castle was presented to William Penn by the Duke of York as a royal gift. The town was Penn's first landing place -- prior to Philadelphia -- when he first set foot on American soil in 1682. New Castle was originally settled by the Dutch in 1651, who had befriended the local Indians and built their village within the confines of Fort Kasmir.

Today, Old New Castle appears much like it did in the late 1700's and many, many buildings that were built during that period stand today. Town residents have managed to keep New Castle from becoming a tourist trap, however summer weekends play host to hundreds of visitors. New Castle has served as the backdrop for many motion pictures and documentaries, including "Dead Poet's Society."

Volunteer : Images of the First State's volunteer firefighters and their machines. With the exception of the City of Wilmington, Delaware residents are protected solely by Volunteer Fire-Rescue departments. It is a 300 year old tradition that is fast disappearing as more and more demands are placed on a dwindling volunteer force.

Know Your Italian Saints : The celebration of a patron saint has very special meaning. Just look toward our Irish brothers and sisters on St. Patrick's Day for proof. But for Italians, honoring their hometown Saint isn't about green wine -- it remains a meaningful and holy tradition.

Each year in Wilmington, DE, the state's residents, regardless of belief or culture, become Italian for a shirt time during the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua. It's a week long celebration that culminates in a procession through the streets of Wilmington -- a procession which passes through the city's Little Italy section, as well as Puerto Rican, Mexican and African-American neighborhoods.

Fort Delaware : Located on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, Fort Delaware is a stopping point for avid Civil War buffs. Operated by Union forces, it served as a prison for captured Confederate soldiers and at one point held 17,000 inmates.

Everyone Goes Home : This past week firefighters throughout the USA and Canada recognized Firefighter Safety Week. Firefighting is often referred to as North America's most dangerous job, and righfully so. Each year 110 fire-rescue personnel die on the job, but line of duty deaths aren't the only numbers that are considered. Nearly HALF of the firefighting force of 1,100,000 in North America (career and volunteer) are injured on the job every year. Once known as the "Firefighting Stand Down" the week serves to remind firefighters to remain vigilant of the dangers of fire-rescue work. We ask them to remember that "Everyone Goes Home!"

In this set, firefighters from New Castle County, DE represent tens of thousands of other fire crews worldwide in this special tribute to firefighter safety.
